Screenshot Evidence Best Practices for Online IP Reviews
Capture URLs, timestamps, page context, dynamic states, source identifiers, and original files so screenshots remain reviewable.

Screenshots are central to many online IP cases, but a screenshot can lose value when it omits the source, time, identity, or surrounding page. A repeatable capture standard makes findings easier to review and compare.
Capture both overview and detail
Begin with a full-page or wide-context capture showing the platform, address bar where possible, account or seller, and the relevant content in place. Then take focused images of the trademark, copyrighted work, product claim, price, contact detail, or other important element.
The overview explains where the evidence came from. The detail makes the issue readable.
Record source information separately
Store the complete URL as text, not only inside an image. Add the capture date, time, time zone, page title, platform identifier, listing ID, seller ID, account handle, territory, language, and reviewer.
Long or dynamic URLs may contain temporary parameters. Preserve the observed URL and, where appropriate, a normalized stable link.
Handle dynamic content
Record tabs, variants, menus, hover states, popups, carousels, video timestamps, and scrolling steps required to reveal the content. Capture product variants individually when images, sellers, or descriptions change.
For disappearing stories, advertisements, or live content, note the limited availability and approved capture method.
Preserve original files
Save originals in a controlled evidence location. Do not paste all screenshots into a presentation and discard the source files. Assign stable names or evidence IDs and calculate hashes where integrity tracking is required.
Use lossless formats when text clarity matters. Avoid repeated compression through messaging applications.
Separate annotations
Create an annotated copy for arrows, highlights, translations, or redactions. Keep the untouched original and record who created the derivative. Do not add a highlight that hides surrounding text or suggests a relationship that is not visible in the source.
Protect privacy and safety
Collect only information relevant to the case. Avoid exposing customer addresses, payment data, private messages, or unrelated account information in broad reports. Use approved redaction and access controls.
Do not enter real credentials or purchase unsafe products merely to improve a screenshot. Escalate specialized collection needs to authorized teams.
Run a quality check
Before closing the capture task, confirm:
- The source and relevant identifier are visible or recorded.
- Text and imagery are readable.
- The complete issue is shown in context.
- Date, time, and territory are recorded.
- Original and annotated versions are distinguishable.
- The file is linked to the protected asset and case.
Know the limitation
A screenshot records a visible state. It does not by itself prove who controlled an account, whether a product is authentic, or whether a legal right was infringed. Combine it with ownership, authorization, source, and response records.
